"Defining" Moments with Sherry: Weekend Meltdown

Snow on a railing

As most of you probably already heard, the weather is supposed to look more favorable for the weekend . The weather report shows temperatures will be in the mid to upper 30’s. Now that is something to get excited about, with the temperature above freezing your pipes are less likely to freeze!

Isn’t it funny how New Yorker’s get so excited about 30°? Well at least I do. My basement on the other hand does not like it so much. Remember to check your sump pumps to make sure they are working properly. A failed sump pump can result in thousands of dollars in damage to your most precious appliances. I know when the rain falls or the snow melts I double check my sump pump because living in an older home; the water just seems to make its way in, one way or another.

Roofs may leak when the snow and ice start to melt. Ice can dam up under the shingles and when it gets warm enough out for the ice to start melting, its only place to go is inside your home. To minimize the problem, hire a professional to shovel or rake the snow off your roof before it freezes.

When snow melts, stairs can be just as slippery as if covered in snow. At night that standing water freezes causing the black ice that everyone fears. So be careful at night and early morning and watch for that black ice still lingering around, be sure to use caution when making your way outside in those wet and icy conditions.

Happy snow is melting because spring is in the air!
